2. Call for Nomination for the 2007-2008 GTA Awards
In order to be considered for one of several Graduate School's Graduate Teaching Assistant (GTA) awards, you must first be nominated (typically by your Faculty Advisor) and submit a portfolio including relevant information about your teaching experience.
The Graduate School has further information and a Nomination Checklist (PDF) that is helpful in preparing the compilation documents for the portfolio.
Once all nomination packets are received by the Graduate School, they are forwarded to the Graduate Student Teaching Award Committee. This University-wide committee then meets to discuss the candidate list and the evaluation criteria used to determine the award winners. All of the nominee packets are distributed amongst the committee members so that each graduate student is assigned at least two faculty evaluators. Each evaluators' task is to conduct classroom visits of their designated students in order to talk to them and observe their teaching style. The student's teaching attributes are generally assessed by the evaluators during different class periods.
Each committee member then writes a brief summary of the observation which is conveyed to the full committee for deliberation. The candidates are ranked and the eventual winners are chosen.
The two highest ranked graduate students are also conferred the title of Calvin A. VanderWerf recipients. All award winners are recognized for their accomplishments in an intimate ceremony where their parents and friends can meet each other and are presented their plaques.
