Professor Scott Powers’ research interests focus on cardiac and skeletal muscle function in both health and disease.  He has investigated exercise-induced changes in cardiac antioxidant systems and the role of antioxidants and stress proteins in providing myocardial protection against ischemia-reperfusion injury.  In addition, Power's laboratory has been studying the contribution of free radicals to respiratory muscle dysfunction during prolonged mechanical ventilation.  His research has been supported by grants from the NIH, American Heart Association, Florida Biomedical Research Program, and the American Lung Association. Powers has received more than $10.7 million in external grant funds and has served as a principal investigator on more than 15 studies.  He has co-authored four textbooks, written numerous book chapters, and contributed to more than 150 scientific papers in influential journals, including the American Journal of Physiology, Free Radicals in Biology, American Journal of Critical Care Medicine, and Journal of Applied Physiology. Powers is a fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine and a fellow of the American Academy of Kinesiology and Physical Education.
