In 1985, Dr. Michael Burridge was awarded the largest individual grant in the history of the College of Veterinary Medicine to create a vaccine against heartwater, a tick-borne, foreign animal disease that is highly pathogenic for ruminants.  Under Dr. Burridge's leadership, the Heartwater Research Project, having pursued for more than 20 years with extramural awards totaling $15 million, is the largest and longest-running research project in the college.  It is the leader among heartwater research groups in the world and has produced 15 patents, including new diagnostic tests, tick control technologies, and inactivated and recombinant vaccines for heartwater.  Dr. Burridge’s research endeavors have promoted the graduate training and education of multiple scholars of the sub-Saharan region.  He has authored more than 200 research papers, and the research team he headed published more than 200 additional peer-reviewed research papers.  Currently, Dr. Burridge is writing a book that promises to be the definitive assessment of invasive ticks that threaten the U.S.
