Professor Maurice Swanson is a professor of Molecular Genetics and Microbiology and a UF Research Foundation Professor.  He is an established investigator of the American Heart Association and has an NIH-funded research program focused on RNA dominance in disease. His work on the regulation of RNA processing in cells has led to the recognition that defects in RNA processing are the basis for diseases such as Huntington’s disease and myotonic dystrophy.  His studies on congenital myotonic dystrophy, a disease which results in profound weakness with difficulty in breathing and eating in infants, has garnered him national and international acclaim.  Swanson has developed several genetically engineered mouse models for the study of the molecular basis of these diseases.
