During the past six years, Professors Mary Brownell and Paul Sindelar have received more than $7 million in funding from the U.S. Department of Education to study issues related to teacher preparation and teacher quality. As two leading scholars in this area, their work has had a significant influence during the past decade in shaping federal and state policy regarding criteria to determine how such teachers should be prepared and if a teacher is highly qualified. Much of their research has been done as part of the federally funded Center on Personnel Studies in Special Education (COPSSE), which was funded for more than $4 million by the U.S. Department of Education in 2000 with Brownell and Sindelar as co-directors. The COPSSE included the participation of other universities (e.g., John Hopkins University and Vanderbilt University) and engaged federal and state policymakers and agencies in the crafting of a research agenda for teacher education. The research of Brownell and Sindelar will continue to significantly contribute to teacher preparation in the coming years.
