Dr. Mark Brantly is a Professor of Medicine and Molecular Genetics and Microbiology and the Alpha One Foundation Research Professor in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine.  He is a world-renowned clinical/basic science expert in Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and Alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency.  His research has focused on the development of new treatment modalities.  In collaboration with the Powell Gene Therapy Center, some of these efforts have included the use of gene therapy for the treatment of Alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency.  These studies have led to the start of the first Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency Gene Transfer Research Study in human subjects.  Dr. Brantly holds an NIH K24 Award in Patient-Oriented Research from the Heart Lung and Blood Institute for the training of young investigators of all aspects related to patient-oriented research.  Besides receiving the Alpha-1 National Association Award, Dr. Brantly has served on the Board of Directors of the Alpha-1 Foundation as its first scientific director.  Dr. Brantly serves as deputy director of the General Clinical Research Center (GCRC) at UF.
