Professor Lena Qiying Ma is a world-renowned expert in the uptake of arsenic and other metals into plant systems (phytoremediation), as well as land application of non-hazardous chemicals.  In 2006, Ma was awarded $350,000 in grants (adding to her $3.4 million total), received three patents (in addition to her three existing patents), published 32 peer-reviewed articles and four book chapters, and mentored 13 graduate students.  Her papers have generated more than 1,600 citations; four of them have already generated more than 100 citations this past year.  Ma served as panel manager for the USDA-SBIR Soil, Air and Water Program in 2006.  Her research was recognized with the USDA Secretary’s Honor Award in 2004. Ma is a consistently outstanding performer whose productivity increases each year.
