Professor Laurence Morel is recognized as an authority on systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE).  Her main interests are to identify the genes that confer SLE-susceptibility and the contribution of autoimmunity to the disease.  As a geneticist, she has used mouse models to determine that SLE is a complex multi-trait disease, which involves regions on chromosomes 1 and 4.  Morel’s work is currently funded by three NIH grants.  She is a member of the HAI study section of the NIH, a member of the Alliance for Lupus Research Study Section, and a member of the editorial board of Autoimmunity.  Morel also holds a leadership role in the Interdisciplinary Graduate Program (IDP) of the College of Medicine.
