Dr. John Klauder joined the departments of Physics and Mathematics in 1988 as a tenured professor. He spent the beginning of his professional career (1953-88) at AT&T Bell Laboratories, where he made seminal contributions to the mathematical theory of lasers (quantum optics and the coherent state formalism) and assumed several leadership positions, including head of the Theoretical Physics Department, editor of the Journal of Mathematical Physics, and president of the International Association of Mathematical Physics. His high level of research activity remains unabated. His recent work focuses on quantum field theory and the quantization of dynamical systems with constraints, resulting in his third book, Beyond Conventional Quantization. Dr. Klauder’s stature in theoretical physics was affirmed by his appointment as the 2006 Lars Onsager Professor at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology and his election as a foreign member of The Royal Norwegian Society of Sciences and Letters.
