Dr. James Channell, a professor of Geological Sciences, received the 2005 Gilbert Award of the American Geophysical Union (AGU). He was cited for "his remarkable contribution of characterizing and interpreting the structure and secular variation of the geomagnetic field since Gilbert's time." The award is named for William Gilbert (1544-1603), who, apart from being the physician to Queen Elizabeth I, carried out numerous experiments on lodestone (magnetic iron oxide ore that was used in initial studies of geomagnetism). Dr. Channell was elected a fellow of AGU in 1998.
