Professor Chad Werch’s research focuses on the etiology and prevention of substance abuse. His institute is currently investigating the efficacy of brief, multiple behavior health interventions for at-risk adolescents. Werch has been awarded more than $11.5 million in funding to study adolescent substance abuse and is currently principal investigator on two NIH research grants. He has had NIH funding as a principal investigator since 1992. Werch has published nearly 90 refereed and invited journal papers and book chapters. He has developed and tested more than a dozen prevention interventions, two of which received “Model Program” recognition from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. He has conducted numerous randomized community trials evaluating innovative strategies found to significantly reduce alcohol, tobacco, and drug use among youth. The American School Health Association recognized him for Outstanding Contributions to Drug Abuse Prevention and with the Outstanding Researcher Award. Werch is a past president and current fellow of the American Academy of Health Behavior.
