As both an educator and researcher, Dr. Dunn has received much recognition and many awards, including the College of Medicine Exemplary Teacher Award in 2006 and the Faculty Research Prize in 1998. Dr. Dunn’s research is focused on understanding the specificity of aspartic proteinases, including gastric enzymes, enzymes from the malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum, and retroviral enzymes, such as HIV and FIV. His work on active site specificity has proved valuable in the process of drug design for targets involved in infectious diseases. He has served on many NIH review panels and has served as the president of the International Proteolysis Society (2004-05). Dr. Dunn is a member of the Council of the American Peptide Society, editor-in-chief of Protein and Peptide Letters, editor-in-chief of Current Protein and Peptide Science, and co-editor-in-chief of Current Protocols in Protein Science. Dr. Dunn was selected for a prestigious Merit Award from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases Council in 2005, and he has earned almost $2 million in grant funding for research and life science education projects.
