Nomination Process
The Scholars program was founded August 2004 as a means of rewarding and utilizing our most effective educators, enhancing the learning environment. The selection process is highly competitive and based solely on merit.
The appointment to the Faculty Development advisory council provides a $15,000 discretionary account distributed over a three-year period.
In Spring 2005, five inaugural fellows were selected. Five additional members will be appointed each subsequent year, thereby maintaining a total of 15 active members.
Selection Criteria:
- Committed to the belief that superior teaching and research go hand–in–hand.
- Has a very high level of experience and a history of success in the classroom that goes well beyond excellent student evaluations.
- Has a strong desire to assist colleagues at all levels in effective teaching and learning strategies.
Roles and Responsibilities:
- To form, as a group, an interdisciplinary forum for discussions on common pedagogical approaches and disciplinary differences.
- To share their teaching strategies, successes and challenges with the campus community via workshops, discussion groups, seminars, etc.
- To serve as mentors to faculty and graduate teaching assistants.
- To serve as advocates for a university–wide discourse on the commitment to excellence in teaching.
- To foster recognition of the importance of teaching as an indispensable dimension of undergraduate and graduate education.
- To deliver faculty seminars on areas of interest.
- To write scholarly articles on a pedagogical subject of their interest for the forthcoming Faculty Development newsletter.
Eligibility:
Tenured faculty may be nominated for an Academy position. However, graduate teaching assistants and assistant professors may serve as nominators.

The nomination form and other required materials are available in PDF format. All nominations must be received by January 15, 2008. No e-mail nominations will be accepted.

The Appointment:
The selected scholars will serve a three-year term on the Associate Provost for Faculty Development Advisory Board. A plaque with the names of the Distinguished Teaching Scholars is displayed in the Office of the Provost.
