Passport to Transfer - Travel Tip 3

Speaking the Language

As you prepare to transfer to UF, you should know and understand some key terms and phrases. Here are some definitions that apply directly to you.

Index to Majors and Their Colleges/Schools - List of transfer requirements, for each UF degree, located on Internet at http://www.isis.ufl.edu

Admission requirements - the necessary minimum criteria every applicant must have to be admitted to UF. Many majors at UF have additional requirements for admission as a junior.

Catalog year - the academic year and the edition of the Undergraduate Catalog that identifies the academic requirements that govern your UF studies. Your catalog year is determined by the academic term you began undergraduate studies, provided you have maintained continuous enrollment in a Florida public institution.

Course sequence - the specified order of enrollment for a series of courses; e.g., ENC 1101, 1102, 1145.

Critical tracking criteria - the courses required for entry to a major; these courses are in bold (or are noted) in the Undergraduate Catalog and are marked with >>> in ISIS.

Degree audit - information on a student's progress toward a degree, updated each fall and spring semester. Also referred to as a tracking audit or SASS audit.

Degree shopping - exploring possible majors to determine your interest and to estimate whether the course work you have completed meets any of the degree requirements for a major.

Excess credits - credit hours exceeding 115% of the degree requirements.

Graduation requirements - university-wide and college-specific requirements that must be met for graduation from UF.

ISIS - the Integrated Student Information System that allows you to degree shop, identify degree requirements and evaluate your progress toward degree completion.

Major - an academic program with a course concentration of at least 30 hours.

Minor - an academic program with a course concentration of at least 15 hours. Minors are optional.

On track or off track - refers to students who are or are not meeting degree requirements each term, according to their majors' universal tracking plans.

Overall GPA - the cumulative grade point average of all courses taken at UF.

Petition - a request for an exception to a college or university deadline, regulation or policy. Petitions may be considered if the circumstances are beyond the student's control.

Preprofessional GPA - the grade point average achieved in specified courses required for admission to a major. These courses generally are completed in the first two years of study, and the required GPA is often higher than 2.0.

Prerequisite courses - any course you must take and successfully complete before you can enroll in another course.

Track - a detailed semester-by-semester plan for graduation.

Universal tracking - an academic advising program that provides each student with a detailed course plan each term. The goal is a timely graduation.
