A native of Hampshire in southern England, he obtained a B.Sc. in Geography at the London School of Economics, and an M.A. and Ph.D. from McMaster University, Canada. His research and teaching center upon natural water-related phenomena, such as floods and droughts, which effect human activity, particularly the nature and causes of their fluctuations through time and between regions. Presently, he heads an international collaboration to forecast flows into the major hydroelectricity generating plants of Colombia, Panama and Costa Rica, a region severely hit by El Niño. Other areas in which he has worked span the Americas from the Canadian Arctic to the southern Andes, and include southern Africa.
